Santiago di Compostela
Spanje heeft de laatste decennia een aantal (zeer) grootschalige culturele centra gebouwd. Calatrava’s Ciutat de les Arts i les Cièncie, de Matadero Centro de Creacion Contemporanea in Madrid en Herzog & de Meurons Forum Barcelona. Met wisselend succes. De nieuwste is in aanbouw, Peter Eisenman’s Cidade da Cultura de Galicia in Santiago de Compostela (Galicië). De New Yorkse architect Eisenman was ook de ontwerper van het Mahnmal holocaustmonument in Berlijn.
De Cidade bestaat onder andere uit een museum, een bibliotheek, een archief, een theater en tentoonstellingsruimtes. De verschillende faciliteiten worden met elkaar verbonden door middel van voetgangersgebieden en een centrale plaza, omringd door 25 hectare park. Twee torens, ontworpen in 1992 door John Hejduk, een collega van Eisenman, maken ook deel uit van het complex.
Volgens de Fundacion Cidade da Cultura de Galicia:
‘Its spaces shall host services and activities devoted to the preservation of heritage and memory, the study, research, experimentation, production and dissemination in the field of literature and thinking, music, drama, dance, film, the visual arts, audiovisual creation and communication.
Inspired by the historic city of Compostela, the complex shall be articulated by streets, colonnades, gardens and plazas, transcending the mere concept of a cultural center to become a city with a life of its own, where visitors may not only enjoy the programming scheduled for each building, but also go shopping, eating out or just simply strolling.’
De geplande opening van bepaalde onderdelen, waaronder de bibliotheek en het archief, is eind 2010. De opening van het Galicische museum zal plaatsvinden in de loop van 2011. De bouw van de andere onderdelen is nu in de beginfase.
